In our last example, we’ll demonstrate how to apply multiple local adjustments to different areas of this photo. Use the mask tool to brush over the area you want to apply the adjustment to, and use the controls on the Adjustments docker to adjust the effect to your liking. You can also begin an adjustment in Local Adjustment Mode. Select the adjustment (in this case we are using a Gamma filter), and Ctrl-click in the on/off box to switch to Local Adjustment Mode. In this example, the adjustment we chose seems to make only a subtle difference, but toggling the effect off and on shows that the filter makes the subject really pop. You can go to Mask > Mask Marquee to turn off the marquee if you want. Then use the mask tool to apply the adjustment only where you want. On the property bar, set the mask tool to Normal mode and adjust the brush size if necessary. NOTE : any Mask tool can be used to apply a local adjustment. This activates your most recently used mask tool, which in this example is the Brush Mask tool, and creates a mask that includes the entire image. To apply the adjustment only to the subject and not the background, click the Options icon for the effect, and choose Local Adjustment Mode. In this example we applied a Contrast Enhancement filter to the whole image, using the eyedroppers to sample a shadow color and a highlight color. It’s also possible to apply filters to part of an image, such as the subject in this photo.Ĭhoose the adjustment you want to apply. The previous example demonstrated how filters can be applied to an entire image. How to Apply Adjustments to an Image Area
